2012 Vintage: "I've never quite understood why this deep and juicy, brambly jam and blackberry-flavoured red from old-vine garnacha by the Bodegas Borsao co-operative has stayed so cheap despite widespread critical acclaim. No matter: this is a genuine example of a wine that punches way above its weight." David Williams, The Observer, 19th January 2014

Le Fou translates as The Madman, as it has long been thought only a madman would try to produce the perfect Pinot Noir in southern France. Obviously fuller than Pinot Noir from Burgundy, it has warm, ripe cherry fruit, is intense and sweet with a savoury twist. Raspberry and gamey on the nose, it has an almost graphite character with violets and blue berries. Gentle acidity with light and tasty tannins add balance to this smooth, appealing red. Its a wine that gets you thinking
with layers of really lovely fruit, its very drinkable and perfect if you prefer a riper, fruitier style of Pinot.
"Bright and clean dark berry fruit. Not at all confected, but warm, sweet and welcoming. Incredibly drinkable, with the sensation of biting into a ripe strawberry and letting the juice run down your chin. Fresh, bright and superb value" Judges Comments, The Wine Merchant 'Top 50'
Paler ruby than some earlier vintages due to the extreme proportion of Grenache, the nose is however as explosive, plush and opulent as ever, layered with exotic spice, cracked black pepper and of course streaked with crushed vanillin. The palate is instantly appealing, polished and smooth on entry but steeped in depth and texture as the flavours swirl around, lengthen and delight. The lasting impression is satisfying - a big, oppulent and sweet Grenache driven wine with obvious oak quality, great structure, length and finish.
This historic Domaine has been producing Beaujolais wines since 1850. The Domaine stretches over 34 ha divided over many of the Cru Classe villages within Beaujolais. The beautiful vaulted cellar is still the hub of the winery. The Sambadier family have owned Manoir du Carra for many generations and take an active role in the vineyards and in the cellar. The vines are tended to by hand and at harvest the bunches are picked by hand, and sorted on entry to the winery to check the individual grape quality. Tasting Note: "Ruby red in colour with redcurrant, cherry and flint on the nose. Classic red berry and mineral flavours are well balanced by the medium body and fresh style."
