The little extra rounding from the Merlot adds a plumy mid-palate weight to this richly spicy and expressive wine. This really is splendid value; a very good choice to go with a mid-week supper, even, dare one suggest, although one does not necessarily endorse such things, to accompany a meal in front of the TV.

A wonderful, fresh, aromatic Sauvignon pale light golden in colour. Fresh, crsip and minerally with strong citrus and gooseberry flavours and great balance. This is a very clean sauvignon that is certainly not lacking in fruit.

Pale gold colour with green highlights. The nose is complex with notes of white fruit and white flowers. The mouth is well balanced with a good structure. Lovely everyday drinking Chardonnay.

Comenge was consecrated by offering some of the biggest bargains of the cult region of Ribera del Duero. Biberius is a tasty Tempranillo matured only four months in oak barrels. It is a soft and silky wine with great fruit and freshness.

Côteaux du Lyonnais is a little known appellation in Gamay territory and the wines have an affinity with their Beaujolais neighbours. Franck Decrenisse makes some of the best, light, rounded and with full of berry flavours. A lovely steak wine.

The cool climate of the Casablanca Valley is one of the few places, outside Burgundy where one may expect Pinot Noir to perform well. And perform well it most certainly does here; the Hermosa Pinot Noir is bright of hue, with an attractive Morello Cherry spicy nose and a palate which combines bright acidity and silky red-fruits. An impressive effort, not quite Burgundy, of course, but with many redeeming features, only one of which is the lack of a Burgundian price-tag.
