2nd wine of Chateau d'Issan

Riesling Steinriegl Smaragd shows a very clean, golden colour, with a hint of green coming through. It is fantastically shiny, and on the nose beautiful aromas of citrus fruits, smoke and exotic fruits are expressed. This is a brilliantly structured wine, both powerful and very impressive, though also gracefully elegant. All in all, a fantastic example of Smaragd, and a real pleasure to drink.

This wine is a dichotomy: full bodied and rich on the one hand and fresh and crisp on the other. It's well balanced and intense and perfect with salads and fish dishes.

Bright clear golden yellow. On the nose, intensely flowery (violets) and fruity (apricot, peaches and citrus). On the palate, fresh and round. Rich, unctuous and full bodied. Overall harmonious with light acidity and round fleshy fruits. Delicate and elegant.

A deep burgundy red colour. On the nose are bright, clear aromas of strawberry and ripe cherry, plus something a bit earthy. The wine is light in body and medium in finish. It shows off traditional pinot noir notes of cherry and mushroom, and has an overall smokiness.

A very good pinot noir!

From the dramatic precipitous slopes of the Wachau, perched imperiously over the serpentine Danube, Weingut Prager makes some of the most intellectually satisfying Riesling in the world. Taut, with flinty, green apple notes, and hints of white pepper and capiscum, the wine will, over the next two-three years open out, revealing a richness and length that make it a perfect match for turbot, shell fish, or even sushi.

Dark garnet colour, with sweet caramel, mocha, vanilla and cinamon aromas. Redolent of red fruits. The mouth is, full bodied, viscous, pleasant and balanced in with a high concentration of red fruits such as plums adn cherries. Elegant tannins and long, lingering finish.

Replanted in 1990 with twenty different ancient clones drawn from Toni Bodenstein’s personal collection, this 1 hectare site lies at 400 metres overlooking the Danube; it’s a different site from that of the Veltlinber however. The net result of such terroir is a wine of bristling acidity, exquisitely balancing the 23 grams of residual sugar to brilliant effect: such purity, such weave, such joy. Drinking from 2015.

This is a serious Pinot Noir, rich, dark and enticing with firm tannins and a refreshing acidity.

A spicy and virile wine that bristles with energy; it's cool, pure and lovely. Arguably this wine needs time to reach its full potential.

Rieussec is the leading estate in the region and this Semillion is a perfect example, it's full bodied, thick and has a delicious palate of lemon, honey and vanilla; the finish is exquisite. Try with biscotti!

Intense aromas of dried lemons, honey and apricots follow through to a full-bodied, dense palate of very sweet fruit that shows masses of dried fruit characters. Last a very long time on the palate.

Light golden with just the slightest tint of green, the 1983 Rieussec, from an excellent year for Sauternes, is certainly one of this property's greatest wines. Well structured with excellent acidity, and a deep, long, rich, full-bodied, viscous texture, this wine, despite the richness and power, is neither heavy nor cloying. It has gorgeous balance and a very long, lingering, spectacular finish. One of the great successes of the vintage.

HOME SUPPLY

Intense gold with persistent fine mousse. The nose opens with floral rose notes and warms to toasted brioche. The mouth is full and fresh with spicy floral notes (wallflower or nasturtium), underpinned with candied yellow fruit. The finish is long and dry. This is a classy mid-term vintage from Pol Roger that will continue to improve for at least 5 years in bottle and in magnum for 10-12 years.

An exclusive declassified Sauternes from the greatest estate in the region. Chateaux that do not have a second wine often declassify the production that does not quite make it into the final selection of the Grand Vin. Naturally we cannot reveal the name of the Chateau in question but rest assured that this little beauty will not disappoint! The 2009 vintage was a great one for Sauternes, on a par with 2007 and 2001, and capable of ageing for 30+ years.

One of the less well-known Prager vineyards & wines, yet for me one of their most singular & thrilling, perhaps because Klaus is located way up the rock face at approx 550 metres above sea level, on one of the Wachau’s most exposed sites & Prager’s highest vineyard. I admire this wine for its uncompromising stance & brilliant tension; influenced no doubt by the rocky, nutrient poor soils. One for the long term, till 2019 & beyond.

La Dame de Montrose is the second wine of Second Growth estate Chateau Montrose, and produced a real beauty here. Made of 67% Cabernet Sauvignon and 33% Merlot, this is a plush and sexy La Dame.

Intense nose of tropical fruit and caramel. In the mouth, it has more caramel, melons and a touch of grass. Very pleasant creamy mouthfeel. Medium long finish with some barrel toast. Some evidence of oak

This particular wine is only produced in years when the Pinot Noir grapes reach perfect maturity. The wine derives from the following holdings: Les Bressandes, Les Chaumes, Les Pougets, Les Perrières and Les Grèves, all of which are planted with vines with an average age of over 40 years.
After about 10-12 months of ageing, each cask is then meticulously tasted and only the finest ones, showing the best colour, bouquet and capacity to age, will be blended to make Château Corton-Grancey.

This dense ruby/purple-colored wine is one of the most successful wines of the vintage for this appellation.
